Porcelain veneers are designed to mask imperfections in your front, or anterior, teeth that are visible when you smile. They are not intended to serve any restorative purpose. Dental veneers made from porcelain are remarkably natural-looking for a few reasons. Porcelain mimics the translucent look of natural enamel, so your new smile will be beautifully white, without appearing unnatural or fake. Porcelain can be fabricated in a wide variety of tooth-colored shades, so you and Dr. Aburas can select a shade that looks the best for your smile. Before you begin your veneer treatment, Dr. Aburas will discuss your aesthetic preferences and provide recommendations on the size, shape, and color of veneer that will look best for your smile.
Preparing the Teeth
Because veneers are bonded to the front of your teeth, Dr. Aburas will need to remove a very small amount of enamel before they are applied. This step makes room for your veneers and creates a slightly roughened surface that will allow for a stronger bond. To alleviate any discomfort during this process, he may administer local anesthesia. Once they are prepared, Dr. Aburas will take impressions of your teeth. To ensure that you are satisfied with your new smile, Dr. Aburas will create a diagnostic wax model for you to see before your permanent veneers are ordered. This way, you can discuss any changes you would like to make with Dr. Aburas before your permanent veneers arrive. Once you are satisfied with your wax up, Dr. Aburas will order your permanent veneers and provide you temporary ones to wear while they are fabricated.
The Application Process
Once your permanent veneers are ready, you will return to Dr. Aburas Dental Center to have them applied. Bonding your veneers in place is a painless procedure that takes just minutes. Once they are placed, Dr. Aburas will examine your bite and make sure that you feel comfortable and satisfied with your appearance. Because of the preparatory wax-up process done before your permanent veneers are made, nearly all of our patients are pleased with their permanent veneers when they are applied. Should you have any problems with your bite or the look of your smile at this appointment or in the weeks following, Dr. Aburas is happy to make adjustments for you.
Caring for Your Veneers
Porcelain veneers feel and function like natural teeth, and you should care for them in the same way. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once a day, and attend six-month checkups and cleanings at Dr. Aburas Dental Center. Porcelain is naturally resistant to chipping, cracking, and staining. With proper hygienic care, your veneers can last 10 years or more.
