Nitrous Oxide Sedation

What does Sedation mean?

Elimination of pain and anxiety in a conscious patient which means that the patient will be awake and can respond normally verbally. All the vital signs will be monitored to make sure that they are stable during dental procedure, there is no significant risk of the absence of protective reflexes, and the patient will be able to return to his normal being directly after the removal of the nasal mask within 3-5 minutes.

What are the dental procedures that are usually done under Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Most of the dental treatments can be done under the Nitrous Oxide Sedation such as teeth extraction, root canal treatments, and other lengthy surgical procedure.

Who are the candidates for Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

It’s mainly reserved for pediatric age group since children are usually anxious, obstreperous and are scared from dental procedures. They also may not be able to keep still during dental procedures hence can be quite non cooperative. Other include clients who cannot be anesthetized by local anesthesia or having Special needs and/or severe gag reflex.

Side effects of Nitrous Oxide Sedation:

  • Dizziness,nausea,vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Excessive sweating, shivering
  • Disorientation

How does the Nitrous Oxide work?

  • The Sedation starts by fixing the nasal mask over the patient nose, then patient is asked to inhale through the nose normally.
  • There are two gas containers in the device, one of them is Oxygen and the other is Nitrous gas.
  • The dentist will measure the vital signs like pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation by fixing a small device on your finger.
  • After patient inhales the gas he will start to go into the Sedation by feeling little heavy in the limbs and head.
  • And after removing the mask patient will back to normal within 3-5 minutes.
