April 27, 2024 03:47 amThe Evolution of Orthodontic Treatments: From Braces to Clear Aligners
Over the years, dentists have tried to solve malocclusions and other dental and bite disorders through corrective (and later preventive and interceptive) treatments that have evolved over time. We invite you to read on to learn a little more about it.
First a little bit of history.
The use of dental appliances to correct the bite dates back to very distant times, being able to mention ancient Greece and the Etruscan civilization, they were rudimentary devices composed of strings, rings and soft gold strips.
However, orthodontics as we know it today had its beginnings in 18th century France thanks to the studies of Pierre Fauchard, who in his book The Surgeon Dentist already mentioned the first braces, which consisted of small pieces of metal to which a metal wire was attached.
In the middle of the 19th century braces were metal rings that wrapped around the teeth and were joined by wires; it was a very uncomfortable appliance for people, who suffered large sores due to the constant rubbing.
Later, in 1900, we witnessed the beginning of modern orthodontics, when Edward Angle -the father of orthodontics- founded the School of Orthodontia. Over time, braces became smaller and smaller and rounded, for greater patient comfort, and they went from being only metal to other materials such as sapphire, ceramic or resin, much more esthetic and with a color more similar to that of the teeth.
Advances in orthodontic treatment
Although metal braces are still used today, the current ones are much more comfortable, smaller and the material is much better polished. In addition, thanks to constant research, other materials and techniques have been incorporated into this treatment, such as self-ligating braces (either passive or active), which, unlike conventional orthodontics, produce less friction between the bracket and the archwire, making alignment and space closure faster.
Previously, braces were placed one by one on the teeth, which was a long and somewhat tiring process for the patient. Now, they can be virtually placed in their proper position and then placed in the mouth using a template, which is a faster and more comfortable process.
Another of the advantages offered by technological innovations in recent years is 3D imaging by intraoral scanners, achieving an exact reproduction of all the structures that make up the oral cavity. This is a great help when it comes to establishing the diagnosis and orthodontic treatment plan.
Among other advantages that the use of 3D technology has brought us are the predictability of results, the reduction of treatment time, the control of tooth movement during it, and the personalization of treatment, which leads us to the design and manufacture of clear aligners.
Clear aligners are customized splints that adapt to the shape of the patient's teeth and arch, allowing the teeth to move until a correct occlusal relationship and a harmonious smile is achieved. As well as going practically unnoticed, they are more comfortable and convenient than traditional orthodontics, and as they have a prepared surface, they do not cause sores or lesions in the soft tissues of the mouth.
